What to Look for When Buying a Laptop in 2026

May 23, 2026

Laptop buying guide

A good laptop comes down to matching the specs to how you’ll actually use it. Here’s what matters most.

Start with your use case

Light web, email, and documents need far less than video editing or gaming. Be honest about your workload so you don’t overspend, or buy something that struggles in a year.

CPU and RAM

A recent mid-tier chip is plenty for most people. Pair it with at least 16GB of RAM, and 32GB if you multitask heavily or want longevity.

Display

Look for at least a 1080p IPS or OLED panel. A higher resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate are nice, but matte finishes and good brightness matter more for everyday comfort.

Battery life and weight

For a portable machine, prioritize all-day battery and a light chassis. Arm-based chips and efficient processors now make 15+ hours realistic without much trade-off.

Ports and upgradeability

Check for the ports you need before relying on dongles, and remember that RAM and storage are often soldered, so configure them correctly at purchase.
