How Much RAM Do You Really Need in 2026?

How much RAM you need in 2026

RAM (Random-Access Memory) temporarily stores the data your device needs quick access to, like open apps and browser tabs. The more you have, the more you can run at once without slowing down.

Minimum – 16GB

8GB can still get you through very light use, but in 2026 it fills up fast with a modern browser and a couple of apps. 16GB is the sensible floor for most people and keeps everyday multitasking smooth.

Recommended – 32GB

If you keep lots of tabs open, run several apps at once, or want the device to stay capable for years, 32GB is the sweet spot. It leaves plenty of headroom as software keeps getting heavier.

Power users – 64GB

For video editing, 3D work, virtual machines, or heavy gaming with background apps, 64GB or more pays off. Most people don’t need this much and are better off spending the money elsewhere.

Additional notes – speed and upgradeability

Aim for DDR5 at 5600MHz or faster on new machines. Just as important: check whether the RAM is soldered. Many thin laptops can’t be upgraded later, so buy enough up front rather than planning to add more.
